The San Bernardino Mountains offer
a full range of winter activities including skiing,
snowboarding, inner tube slides and snow shoeing,
just begin to name enjoyable mountain activities.
Big Bear Mountain Resorts offers all of the skiing
and snowboarding anyone could want. The lift tickets
from Bear Mountain and Snow Summit are interchangeable
and there is a shuttle that goes between the mountains.
The Resorts combine to offer an enjoyable 65 runs
and 26 lifts.
If
the winter is warm, off-roading and hiking can
be enjoyed in the east Valley. The geologically
older
area is high desert with warmer, arid conditions.
Baldwin Lake Road to 2N02 will take you above Cactus
Flats and give you panoramic views of the Valley.
You can park and hike. The transcontinental Pacific
Crest Trail comes down from Onyx Summit and continues
west through this area, on it’s way to Canada.
The Baldwin Lake Stable are also located in the
east Valley. The stables are open year round with
one and two hour ride past breath taking views.
Exiting out of the east Valley, down Highway 18
will bring you down to Cactus Flats. This area is
20 minutes down the road and usually snow free. People
enjoy using this area for motor cycles and off-roading.
Make sure you bring a cell phone.
The Miss Liberty Paddle Boat is a 65 foot Skipperliner
built in 1994. The downstair gallery boasts an aluminum
ceiling resucued from a boat damaged during hurricane
Katrina. The paddle boat offers hour and a half tours
on weekends throughout the winter. The boat seats
125 people with sheltered deck seating. The Salon
deck has a snack bar and soft drinks. The paddleboat
is located across from the Big Bear Village at Pine
Knot Marina. Go to their website, www.pineknotmarina.com
where reservation can be made year round. For more
information please call 909.866.8129.
You can also park on Stanfield Cutoff and hike along
the lake. If there is no snow, the area is also ideal
for bike riding and dog walking. The trail goes by
the East Valley Boat Ramp and then down to Alpine
Meadow Park. Both facilities have restrooms (may
not be available all year round). There is very little
in the way of traffic on the lake, but you may see
people fishing from the shore.
